William Crockett “Willie” Kelley was born on May 26, 1925, in Norland, Dickenson County, Virginia. He was the son of Silas Kelley and Mary Elizabeth Fleming Kelley. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Abingdon, Virginia, on July 25, 1943, and was assigned to Company C, 179th Engineer Combat Battalion, where he attained the rank of Private First Class.

On August 23, 1944, during the assault crossing of the Seine River near Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry, France, Kelley was killed in action while courageously helping guide infantry troops across the river under enemy fire. He is now buried in the Swindall Cemetery, Clintwood, Dickenson County, Virginia, USA.
