Charles E. Byrd was a Private from Mississippi in the 11th Infantry Regiment during World War II. The 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division was attached to General Patton's Third Army and played a major role in the Battle of the Bulge, particularly in the liberation of Metz. Although buried in Brittany, PVT Byrd was initially buried at the temporary cemetery at Villeneuve-sur-Auvers, France after his death in August of 1944. There is a memorial there commemorating this temporary American cemetery.
