John F. Burton was born on January 12, 1917. He served as a Private in the 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion during World War II. He was killed on August 25, 1944 in France. Although he is currently buried in Long Island National Cemetery, PVT Burton was initially buried in the temporary cemetery at Villeneuve-sur-Auvers, France, along with hundreds of other American, German, and French soldiers. Today, a memorial stands where the cemetery used to be, commemorating those who were buried there during and after WWII.
