John E. Bauer joined the U.S. Army Air Forces through Pennsylvania and served as a second lieutenant for the 338th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group during World War II. Pilot of the P-51 Mustang "Georgette" that took off from Air Station 131 in Nthampstead, Hertfordshire, UK on a bomber escort mission over Frankfurt. Crashed in unknown circumstances around 1120. 2LT Bauer died in France on September 1, 1944. Bauer was initially buried in the temporary American Cemetery of Villeneuve-sur-Auvers, near Paris. He is currently buried in the Brittany American Cemetery in Saint-James, France.
