Donald Walter Hertel was born on April 4, 1923, in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. He was the son of Leo Nicholas Hertel and Susan Maria Horcher Hertel. He served with Company C, 179th Engineer Combat Battalion, as a Private during World War II.
On August 23, 1944, during the Allied assault crossing of the Seine River near Tilly, France, Hertel courageously helped ferry infantry troops across the river under enemy fire. He was seriously wounded, likely by a German sniper, during the operation and succumbed to his wounds the following day, August 24, 1944. He is now buried in the Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, USA.
