George A. Evens was born on October 4, 1918 in Hadley, Saratoga County, New York. He was the son of Harry G. Evens and Ruth Austin Evens. He was the Bombadier of the B-25 Liberator 41-29244 “Double Trouble” that took off from Gioia del Colle, Italy on a mission to bomb the German Messerschmitt aircraft factory by Regensburg. Evens was assigned to the flight at the last minute when the crew's regular bombadier fell ill. Shot down by anti-aircraft fire over Slovenia. Five crew members went down with the plane and five parachuted from the severely damaged aircraft. Taken prisiner of war to Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Prussia where he remained until the end of the war. Evens’ regular bomber, the Honey Chile, blew up during takeoff a few months after he was imprisoned, so his being shot down might have saved his life. George died on July 4, 2000 at the age of 81 and is now buried in the Lake Luzerne Cemetery, Lake Luzerne, Warren County, New York, USA.
