Sgt Donald E. Kirby, radio operator of the B-17 42-31325, took off from station 142 in Deopham Green, Norfolk, UK on a bombing mission over Frankfurt. Shortly after bombs away, the plane was hit by flak and came under attack from German Fw-190 fighters. He bailed out successfully but was later captured and sent to Stalag Luft 4 in Gross-Tychow.
Donald died on July 25, 2014 in Graveport, Ohio at the age of 91.
