Comments:
2nd Lt Clifford Kenneth Hammersley, co-pilot of the B-17 42-107153 “Denny Boy”, took off from station 111 in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over Munich. It took two flak hits that knocked out two engines, forcing the plane to crash land at 0940. German troops were quick to round them up. However, French Resistance fighters ambushed the truck ferrying them and freed the airmen. They set fire to their plane and escaped to Switzerland. They escaped back to the UK through Foggia, Alger, and Casablanca arriving back on September 1st. Hammersley’s full E&E report #2342 can be found at http://media.nara.gov/nw/305270/EE-2342.pdf.
