1st Lt John E. Carpenter Jr., navigator of the B-17 41-24611 “Boomerang”, took off from station 105 in Chelveston, Nothamptonshire, UK at 0900 on a bombing mission over Saint Nazaire’s “Flak Alley” to target the submarine pens there. The plane was shot down by a German fighter and evacuated at 17000 feet. Only Lt Carpenter did not jump.
