2nd Lt Montgomery A. Coddington, pilot of the P-38 Lightning 42-67486, took off from station 454 in Warmwell, Dorset, UK on an armed reconnaissance over the Laval-Le Mans area, with particular care to the railroad at Laval. Around 1735, he dropped his bomb over a bridge and climbed back to 500 feet when his plane was hit from small arms fire, igniting the cooling liquid leaking from his left engine. He crashed in flames.
