Dennis Raymond Chamberlain was born on February 22, 1922, in London, City of London, Greater London, England. He was the son of Samuel Albert Chamberlain and Alice Catherine Chamberlain. He served in the United States Navy during both World War I and World War II. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces and became a fighter pilot with the 474th Fighter Squadron, 429th Fighter Group, flying the Lockheed P-38 Lightning # 44-23671 from RAF Warmwell in England.

On August 3, 1944, 2Lt Chamberlain was killed when his P-38 Lightning crashed near Cne de Gennes-sur-Glaize, approximately 8 kilometers northeast of Château-Gontier in the Mayenne department of France. Chamberlain was flying the second aircraft in a formation led by 1st Lt. Herman Q. Lane during an armed reconnaissance mission targeting enemy road traffic between Laval and Le Mans. While strafing and bombing enemy vehicles, his aircraft was struck by the explosion of one of its own bombs, causing it to crash into a building at approximately 3:50 p.m., killing him instantly. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
