2nd Lt Wallace E. Rock, pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-76455, took off from station 408 in Beaulieu, Hampshire, UK on a ground support mission near Cherbourg. He was shot down by German fighters after a bitter air battle at 1420. His body was recovered in 1993 by a French butcher whose hobby was unearthing WWII sites. It was not identified for three more years. When it finally was, the body was repatriated to the US and buried by the 10th Mountain with full military honors at Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. Originally, 2LT Rock was listed as Missing in Action or non-recoverable. His name was permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial.
