SSgt James P. Cobbs, right waist gunner of the B-24 Liberator 42-63977 “Los Angeles City Limits”, took off from Station 114 Hetel, Norfolk, UK on a bombing mission to Ludwigshafen’s chemical factory. The mission was a success, but multiple bombers were shot down by German fighters on the return flight, including the “Los Angeles City Limits” at 1315. Cobbs was wounded but managed to escape through the Pyrenees/Spain/Gibraltar pipeline, returning to the UK on February 4th 1944 per E&E report #372.
