2nd Lt Jack E. Hill, bombardier of the B-17 42-29921 "Oklahoma Okie", took off from Station 121, Bassingbourn, UK on a bombing mission over Bordeaux along with 500 other aircraft. They were among 25 to get shot down. German fighters set the plane on fire, making it explode at 1158 after the crew managed to bail out at 8000 feet. Not all of them made it safely to the ground.
