Kelly distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as an Aerial Observer with the 96th Aero Squadron, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Conflans, France, 14 September 1918, while on a photographic mission. After the war he served with the Ko�ciuszko Squadron in Poland. He is one of three American Ko�ciuszko Squadron pilots buried in the Ukraine.
