George H. Washington joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in Oklahoma and served as a First Lieutenant during World War II. 1LT Washington was the commander and pilot of the 860th Bomber Squadron, 493rd Bomber Group. On August 18, 1944, Washington and his squadron's B-24 bomber, known by the nickname of "Bolicat," was hit by flak during an attack of the German airfield at Roye-Amy. The initial blast killed Washington instantly. All but 1 member of the crew died in the crash.
