John Verplanck “Jack” Newlin was born on May 16, 1896, in Ardmore, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Richard Marshall Newlin and Alice Edith Eisenbrey Newlin.

John was educated at Haverford School, PA, and Princeton University, class of 1919. He left Princeton as a Volunteer, joining the American Field (Ambulance) Service on May 26, 1917. He was attached to Section 29 of the unit.

On August 4, 1917, he was starting his car when a shell landed near the dugout, wounding him severely. He died of wounds near midnight the next day after receiving his Croix de Guerre.
