Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Armstrong was an American citizen who enlisted in the Australian Infantry (AIF) in Sydney at age 19. He was a member of the AIF 2nd Battalion. He was killed in action between 6-9 August 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign. He was the son of James H. Armstrong, of Gardina, California, U.S.A., and the late Mattie B. Armstrong. Native of Los Angeles, California. He also has a cenotaph located in London Cemetery, London, Shelby County, Indiana.
