SSgt Roland H Jenkins was the right waist gunner on the B-17 42-30031 Triangle P when it took off from station 106 Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire, UK on June 26th, 1943 to bomb the Villacoublay aerodrome. The plane was attacked by FW190 German fighters and flak at 1900, forcing the crew to bail out. Jenkins was first out. His loose harness and tree fall contributed to wrenching his shoulder. He landed in the Bois de Couquereaumont, 3 miles north of Bernouville. After buying civilian clothes from a passing Frenchman, a shepherd led him to the Mispolet house, where a few elderly siblings lived. He hid there for a year, right next to a training Panzer division. The family discouraged him from contacting the underground as the groups had split into extremely divided factions. In July of 1944, the mayor of Vesly approached the family about hiding aviators. After they revealed they had been hiding Jenkins already, plans were made to help all of them escape. They flew back to the UK on September 4th, 1944. His full report is EE-1468 and can be found at http://media.nara.gov/nw/305270/EE-1468.pdf
