His Silver Star citation: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Wilbur F. Nutting (ASN: 0-462658), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 January 1945, in the vicinity of Sigolsheim, Germany. Accompanied by a squad of men, Captain Nutting was inspecting the company's position. Hearing a fire fight at one of the outposts, he immediately raced to the position and encountered four enemy. Leading the squad, he engaged the enemy, killing one and capturing the remaining three. After placing his men in a building and directing their fire upon the enemy from an exposed position, he was killed by enemy artillery. The gallant action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Captain Nutting reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
