Captain Donald Charles Cole was pilot of the B-17 42-30665 “Hunyak” when it took off from Snetterton Heath on a bombing mission to Bordeaux-Mérignac. It was shot down at 1100 hours by a German fighter. Cole decided to stay in the plane, giving his crew enough time to jump, and eventually return to England, while he went down with the plane. He was 23 years old.
