Edward Ray “Eddie” Sowder was born on July 31, 1919, in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was the son of John Christopher Sowder and Lula Mae Harrison Sowder. He served with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II.
Pvt Sowder was fatally shot in the head by a German sniper on June 11, 1944, and, as he lay dying, passed his rifle with its bayonet fixed to his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Département du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
