Colonel Charles H. Young was a U.S. Army Air Forces officer and troop carrier commander best known for leading the 439th Troop Carrier Group during World War II. A 1936 graduate of the Army Air Corps Flying School, he was recalled to active duty in 1942 to help organize and train troop carrier forces before assuming command of the 439th Troop Carrier Group on 21 January 1944. Under his leadership, the group flew 81 C-47 Skytrain aircraft from RAF Upottery during the opening hours of the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944, delivering elements of the 101st Airborne Division into France. Young later led troop carrier operations during the invasions of Southern France, the Netherlands, and Germany. After the war, he documented the experiences of troop carrier crews in his memoir, Into the Valley: The Untold Story of USAAF Troop Carrier in World War II, from North Africa Through Europe, which remains an important firsthand account of Allied airborne operations.
