Ralph Weir was born on April 18, 1916, in Aguilar, Las Animas County, Colorado. He was the son of Helen Sanford McLain Weir. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 23, 1941, at Huerfano, Colorado, and served as a Private with Battery C, 979th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.

On September 27, 1944, he was killed in action together with Private Graczykowski at Sweikhuizen (then in the municipality of Nuth), Limburg, Netherlands, when a 155 mm cannon exploded after a shell detonated inside its barrel. A subsequent investigation concluded that defective detonators were the likely cause. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Henri-Chapelle, Arrondissement de Verviers, Li�ge, Belgium.
