William Cross served as an Able Seaman aboard the U.S.S. Hamilton during the War of 1812.

On August 8, 1813, the U.S.S. Hamilton and U.S.S. Scourge were caught in a sudden, violent storm on Lake Ontario near present-day St. Catharines, Ontario, and both schooners sank. Fifty-three sailors lost their lives in the disaster. The wrecks were discovered in 1973, approximately 300 feet underwater off Port Weller, and are now protected as a National Historic Site and war grave. It remains the largest single loss of life suffered by the United States Navy during the war.

AB Cross is commemorated by a cenotaph in the War of 1812 Naval Memorial Garden, while his remains are believed to still rest within the vessel's wreck in Lake Ontario.
