PFC Casimir Stanislaw Okonowski Born November 4, 1920 in New York, Casimir was the son of Polish immigrants Stanislaw and Janina Zglenicka Okonowski and brother to four siblings. He grew up in Detroit, and after attending two years of college opened his own business, a tool and die shop. All his work was directed towards the war effort and business was booming, bringing in a high profit. But Casimir was bothered by the fact that while he was getting rich many others were risking their lives serving in active military service, so on July 26, 1944 Casimir joined the US Army, not telling Rose until after he had enlisted. She was not happy with his decision but the deed was done, and following basic training Casimir was sent to northwest Europe where he would be assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division and take part in the Rhineland Campaign. On March 18, 1945, PFC Casimir Okonowski was killed in action north of Remagen, Germany, leaving behind his devastated wife. He was 24 years old.
