Refired Officer ASHEVILLE, N. C., Nov. 23 (P),-Lt. Gen. Stafford Leroy Irwin, 62, retired, former di- rector of Army Intelligence, died
early today at his home here. At the time of his retirement in 1952, Gen. Irwin was com- mander of United States forces
in Austria. Gen. and Mrs. Irwin came to Asheville to live in the fall of
1952. Gen. Irwin was born March 23, 1893, at Fort Monroe, Va., the son of Maj. Gen. George Le- roy and Maria Elizabeth Barker
Irwin. He was graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915, the Field Artillery School in 1926 and the Com- mand and General Staff School
in 1927. He was commissioned a sec- ond lieutenant in the Field Ar- tillery in 1915 and advanced through the grades until he was promoted to lieutenant general
on October 15, 1950. Gen. Irwin formerly lived in Washington at 2841 Twenty-
ninth street N.W. He was commanding general of the famous 5th Red Dia- mond) Infantry Division and received the Distinguished Serv- ice Medal as commander of the division Dearheading one of the 3d Army thrusts out of the Nor- mandy beachhead in 1944. He also commanded the Division in the Battle of the Bulge. Later he was commanding general of
the 12th Corps. During the North African campaign, Gen. Irwin received the Silver Star for directing artillery fire which broke a Ger- man attack. At that time he was a brigadier general heading the artillery support of the Thala
sector of the Tunisian line. Gen. Irwin was named director of Army Intelligence, with head-
quarters here, in 1948.
