George W. Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut. He is the eldest son of George H. W. Bush. He attended Yale University, earning a degree in history in 1968, and later served as a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He went on to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975. Before entering politics, he worked in the oil industry and later became part-owner and managing partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, gaining business and leadership experience.

George's political career began with his election as governor of Texas in 1994. He served until 2000 and was re-elected in 1998, becoming the first Texas governor to win consecutive four-year terms. As governor, he promoted education reform, tax cuts, and a bipartisan style of leadership, earning a reputation as a “compassionate conservative.” He became president after the closely contested 2000 election against Al Gore, which was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court. His presidency was dramatically shaped by the September 11 attacks, leading to the launch of the War on Terror. He ordered military operations in Afghanistan to dismantle al-Qaeda and later authorized the 2003 invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein, a decision that remains highly controversial.

Domestically, Bush enacted significant policies, including large tax cuts, the No Child Left Behind Act to reform education, and the creation of Medicare Part D to provide prescription drug coverage for seniors. He also launched the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), one of the largest global health initiatives in history. Bush was re-elected in 2004, defeating John Kerry. His second term, however, was marked by mounting challenges, including criticism over the Iraq War, the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, and the global financial crisis of 2007–2008. His approval ratings declined significantly during this period.

After leaving office in 2009, Bush returned to Texas and largely stayed out of partisan politics. He has written memoirs, participated in humanitarian efforts, and become known for his artwork, especially portraits of veterans and world leaders. Although his presidency is still debated and often ranked below average by historians, public opinion of him has somewhat improved over time.
