Harry Israel Miller was born on July 15, 1914, in Enola Township, Madison County, Nebraska. He was the son of Israel Miller and Harriet Ruth "Hattie" Copeland Miller. Before entering military service, he was employed at the Rabbit Hatch café in Madison. He volunteered for overseas service in June 1941 from Santa Monica, California. Assigned to the 54th Signal Maintenance Company stationed in Manila, Philippines, he was last reported on Corregidor when the fortress surrendered on May 7, 1942, after which Japanese forces took him prisoner.

Cpl Miller died on November 3, 1942, while a prisoner of war at Taiwan POW Camp No. 1 (Taihoku) in Formosa. He is now buried in the Sai Wan War Cemetery, Chai Wan, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. He also has a cenotaph in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Madison, Madison County, Nebraska, USA.
