On September 27, 1944, B-24 #44-10497 was lost while operating with a U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bombardment unit in the European Theater. Like many B-24s engaged in strategic bombing operations over German-controlled territory, the aircraft was destroyed during combat, most likely as a result of enemy fighter interception or anti-aircraft fire encountered on a bombing mission.

2Lt Stearns was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery, Kingman, Kingman County, Kansas, USA.
