David Dwayne Self was born on October 28, 1981, in Pearl, Mississippi. He was the son of Eddie F. Self and Linda Rhodes. He graduated from Pearl High School in 2000 before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in other duty assignments as a Specialist (12B10) at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 2001 to 2003; as a Sergeant (21B20) at Fort Hood, Texas, from 2005 to 2007; and later as a Staff Sergeant (12B30) with the Fires Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment (Dragoons) in Vilseck, Germany, from 2010 to 2011, before being deployed to Afghanistan.

SSgt Self was killed in action on May 16, 2011, in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, after sustaining wounds when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device during Operation Enduring Freedom. Currently, we don't have details about his burial location.
