Joseph Thomas Prentler was born on February 11, 1990, in Fenwick, Michigan. He was a graduate of Carson City–Crystal High School in 2008. He served in G Company, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, as a Specialist and an Infantryman stationed at Vilseck, Germany, and was later deployed to Afghanistan.

Spc Prentler was killed in action on October 4, 2010, in Mama Kariz, Afghanistan, after sustaining wounds when insurgents attacked his military vehicle with an improvised explosive device during Operation Enduring Freedom. He is now buried in the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, USA.
