Rudy Alexander Acosta was born on May 2, 1991, in California. He was the son of Dante Acosta. He graduated from Santa Clarita Christian School in 2009, completed Army basic training later that year, and deployed to Afghanistan on June 10. He served as a health care specialist and planned to attend medical school after completing his military service. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany, and later deployed in Afghanistan.

PFC Acosta was killed in action on March 19, 2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, after sustaining wounds when he was one of two soldiers shot by an individual from a military security group during Operation Enduring Freedom. He is now buried in the Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Newhall, Los Angeles County, California, USA. He was posthumously promoted to Specialist.
