Michelangelo A. Mora was born on December 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. He attended Margaret Harloe Elementary School and Paulding Middle School before enrolling at Arroyo Grande High School. After struggling academically, he turned his life around by attending and graduating from the Grizzly Youth Academy, a military-style program. After working for a year at an ice cream shop in Pismo Beach, Michelangelo enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 2003. He served as a Private First Class and Cavalry Scout with I Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was later deployed in Iraq for the support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
PFC Mora was killed on May 14, 2004, in Najaf, Iraq, when the vehicle he was riding in slid off the road and overturned. The accident was under investigation at the time. He is now buried in the Arroyo Grande Cemetery, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA. His name was mispelled in the monument as Michael A. Mora.
