Levi Bond Kinchen was born on February 15, 1982, in Albany, Livingston Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Carter Kinchen and Barbara Monistere Kinchen. He graduated from Albany High School in 2000 and soon afterward enlisted in the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he specialized in field artillery, then went on to serve an 18-month tour in Germany, followed by a six-month peacekeeping mission in Kosovo before deploying to Iraq. He served as a Specialist and Cannon Crewmember with Howitzer Battery, 2d Squadron, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Spc Kinchen died in his sleep on August 9, 2003, while deployed in Baghdad, Iraq. A fellow soldier attempted to wake him that morning and found that he was not breathing, reportedly due to heat stroke. He is now buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Albany, Livingston Parish, Louisiana, USA.
