Randy Lewis Johnson Jr. was born on March 20, 1973, in Washington. He was married to Claudia Johnson. He worked summer jobs as a lifeguard at the Barry Farm housing complex and graduated from Spingarn High School. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In 2006, while assigned to train troops in Washington state, Johnson requested to rejoin his cavalry regiment in Vilseck, Germany, and deploy once more to Iraq. He served in the K Troop, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, as a Sergeant First Class and Infantryman during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On his third deployment, SFC Johnson was commanding a Bradley Fighting Vehicle unit in Baghdad when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle on September 27, 2007, killing him. He is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
