Joseph Duenas Gamboa was born on July 22, 1973, in Yigo, Guam. He was the son of Francisco and Cecilia Gamboa. He was married to Michelle Gamboa. He served as an Infantryman, holding the rank of Sergeant from 2001 to 2005 with B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry at Fort Lewis, Washington, and later as a Staff Sergeant from 2006 to 2008 with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 2d Stryker Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Vilseck, Germany, with two deployments to Iraq from 2003 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2008.

SSgt Duenas was killed in action on March 25, 2008, in Baghdad, Iraq, after coming under indirect fire during Operation Iraqi Freedom, only two weeks before he was due to return home. He is now buried in the Guam Memorial Park, Barrigada, Guam.
