Rey David Cuervo was born on August 29, 1979, in Tampico, Tampico Municipality, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was the son of Rosalba Kuhn. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1999 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After serving at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as a cavalry driver and gunner, he reported to Apache Troop on August 20, 2003. He served as a Private First Class and Cavalry Scout assigned to Apache Troop, 1st Battalion, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and later deployed to Iraq.
PFC Cuervo was killed in action on December 28, 2003, in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom, when his unit came under enemy artillery fire while guarding a gas station. He is now buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA. On April 1, 2004, Camp Muleskinner, a forward operating base of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, was renamed Camp Cuervo in honor of PFC Cuervo.
