Steven Ivan Candelo was born on June 11, 1987, in Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was the son of Julia Martinez. He was a 2005 graduate of Elsik High School and joined the U.S. Army while still in school. He was assigned to A Troop, 1st Squadron, 2d Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany, where he served as a Corporal and Infantryman, and was later deployed to Iraq.

Cpl Candelo was killed on March 26, 2008, in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle. He is now buried in the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA.
