Peter Haskell Burks was born on April 10, 1981, in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. He was the son of Alan Burks and Jackie Merck. He graduated from Trinity Christian Academy in Addison and Texas A&M University. He worked in marketing for the Dallas Desperados and FC Dallas. After graduating at the top of his Officer Candidate School class, Burks was commissioned in October 2006 as a Field Artillery Officer. He was assigned to P Troop, 4th Squadron, 2d Stryker Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Vilseck, Germany, and later deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On November 14, 2007, just outside Baghdad’s Green Zone, Burks was killed when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. Even after the explosion, his first concern was for the soldiers with him before succumbing to shrapnel wounds to the head. 2Lt Burks is now buried in the Melissa Cemetery, Melissa, Collin County, Texas, USA.
