Robert Thomas “Bobby” Ayres III was born on July 26, 1984, in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of Robert Ayres Jr. and Michelle Ayres. Following his graduation from Malibu High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, achieved the rank of Sergeant, and was assigned to duty in Iraq. He was assigned to Company G, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany.

Sgt. Ayres was killed in action on September 29, 2007, in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His unit was caught in an ambush and came under intense small-arms fire. As the attack unfolded, Ayres pushed his men into the doorway of a nearby building, then turned back to return fire and cover their movement. In doing so, he was struck and mortally wounded, giving his life while protecting his fellow soldiers. He is now buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
