Joseph John Viola was born on May 21, 1921, in Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey. He was the son of John Viola and Mary Louise Viola. He enlisted in the service on October 22, 1942. He served in Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt Viola was Killed in Action on August 27, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery and Mausoleum, East Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, USA.
