Douglas Thomas was born on February 15, 1915, in McDade, Bastrop County, Texas. He was the son of George Samuel Thomas and Selina Ophelia Mobley Thomas. He was married to Aline Singer Voss. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt Thomas was Killed in Action on August 26, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
