Joe Little Squirrel was born on January 1, 1922, in Craig County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Isaac C. Squirrell and Ela Charley Squirrell. He enlisted in the service on February 27, 1941. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt Squirrel was Killed in Action on August 28, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
