Robert McMahon Smith Jr. was born on September 14, 1918, in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. He was the son of Robert M. "Bobby" Smith and Ediss Kathleen Drennen Smith. He was married to Lorene A. "Sis" Buchheim Anderson. He graduated from Washington High School. He was a partner with his father in the sign painting business before entering service in March 1942. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Smith was Killed in Action on August 26, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
