Walter Franklin Rhodes was born on August 2, 1924, in Mississippi. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Rhodes and Cola Rebecca Breland Rhodes. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Rhodes was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
