John Samuel Pawley Jr. was born on December 2, 1913, in Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of John Samuel Pawley Sr. and Bessie Collier Pawley. He served in the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.

2Lt Pawley was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
