Ralph Lewis “Red” Nitterhouse was born on July 18, 1918, in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Robert T. Nitterhouse Sr. and Elizabeth McDonald Nitterhouse. He graduated from the Scotland School for Veterans' children in 1937. He worked as a printer at H.C. Rowe before enlisting in the service on July 14, 1941. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Nitterhouse was Killed in Action on September 3, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
