Herman Everett Nichols was born on January 26, 1921, in Glen Roy, Jackson County, Ohio. He was the son of Cyrus Nichols and Mary Aletha Glass Nichols. He was married to Juanita Mae Stiffler Gilliland. He served in the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Nichols was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Campbell Cemetery, Lick Township, Jackson County, Ohio, USA.
