Etha Nettles was born on October 24, 1921, in Lincoln County, Mississippi. He was the son of Henry Harvey Nettles and Mary Alma "Alma" Nix Nettles. He was married to Evelyn Dixon Ballard. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Nettles was Killed in Action on August 25, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Gum Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Brookhaven, Lincoln County, Mississippi, USA.
